Why the Key to a Good Strategy is Simpler than you Think!

Did you know everything you do has a strategy behind it? Yes, even if you didn’t realise, many of your day-to-day activities are performed very strategically.

 Think about it this way. Each morning when you get ready, you do so in pretty much the same order. You wake up, have a shower, brush your teeth, style your hair, and get dressed. The same order, each day. Why? Because it likely works for you! If it didn’t then you be finding ways to change it.

Hmmm, you haven’t thought about it have you?

Now, let’s think about the strategies you are using in your business.

Strategies are something that sound way more complicated than they really are. The secret to a good strategy is simple – it is one that actually works!

Just like that process of getting ready in the morning, when a strategy isn’t delivering what our business needs, we look for a new way.

So, what is the difference between a habit and a strategy? A habit, otherwise known as a broken strategy, is something that you can’t be bothered changing even if they are not working at an optimum level. Strategies, on the other hand, are unconscious.

 An unhelpful and unresourceful strategy is costing you and your business. When we’re trying to make a poorly designed strategy work, fully knowing it’s not going to, we’re spending a lot of time, energy, mental load and of course, money.

 I can guarantee that you’d much rather welcome back lost hours spent being frustrated or procrastinating and use them to make a real difference in your business and life, right? Absolutely!

To explain the power of a newly designed strategy, I thought I’d share with you the story of a client of mine. This client is a sole trader, who newly launched their business before the string of Melbourne lockdowns took place.

When she came to me, she had very few strategies and was working harder, not smarter. With an array of broken ones, stemmed from not setting boundaries and previous workplace experiences, my client needed to redesign her strategies, for business and personal life, that actually worked with her, not against her.

Together, we designed a series of strategies that she could grab out of her ‘toolkit’ at any moment during the day. These strategies kept her at the forefront of decision making and relieving feelings of anxiousness during scenarios that previously triggered her.

Sounds promising, doesn’t it?

It truly was a game-changer for this client.

The two key strategies that were implemented were, the redesign of her work strategy and the ability to match and mirror during interactions.

The first, a redesign of her work schedule strategy, allowed her to create workflows and rhythms that worked in her favour. In a creative line of work, we were able to identify the days and times she felt most creative and excited to complete those relevant tasks. From there, we restructured her project hours to ensure she was getting the absolute most out of her abilities. This can be likened to the strategy of getting ready in the morning you read earlier – my client started to perform tasks each day in the same way because you guessed it, it was working for her.


The second strategy is where things got even more interesting. My client was finding herself feeling intimidated by stronger personalities and as a result, limiting the boundaries she was setting with them. To redesign her strategy, we harnessed the CORE colours to navigate different client personalities and interactions more productively and positively.


Generally, people look, act, sound and interact with others that possess the same characteristics. They notice these similarities at an unconscious level and just naturally gravitate towards each other. Using the CORE colours, we’re able to match and mirror the characteristics of different personality types. This means that we can achieve more out of an interaction, as we’re communicating in a style that not only works for them but is familiar to them.


For example, reds and blends of reds, who are traditionally very assertive and ‘to the point where my clients biggest challenge in communication. A much more emotive person, these red personalities were dominating her client conversations and therefore, productivity was low, and frustration and time spent were high.


Together, we designed strategies of how my client could communicate “like a red”, at that moment, to cut to the chase and achieve greater outcomes for everyone involved. I will never forget the first time she reported back after implementing this strategy and achieving an immediate outcome from an interaction with a red personality type! If you’re struggling to build rapport with certain personality types, then a CORE match and mirror strategy are definitely one worth exploring.
