Confidence is a word that umbrellas the likes of ‘self-confidence’, ‘self-esteem’ and self-efficacy’ but in reality, these can be very different. In fact, we can be highly skilled in an area with huge amounts of confidence but in another, experience very little of those feelings. Think about our time as children at school – we may have proudly stood at the top of the class of English lessons but once the afternoon math class came around, we sat at the back of the classroom, hoping our name wouldn’t be called out by the teacher.
There are distinct differences between self-esteem and self-confidence. Self-esteem refers to the level of appreciation and value you have for yourself. It develops and changes throughout your life based on experience and interactions with other people. Often, the people around us will influence our level of self-esteem. Self-confidence, on the other hand, surrounds our belief of what we can and can’t do and the trust in our abilities.
So, for something that is relatively simple to grasp, why do people struggle so much to achieve it?

Shame is a roadblock to recovery and becomes part of the reason why people don’t seek help, in whatever capacity that may be. Many consider shame a negative emotion, but it’s actually not an emotion at all, it is a limiting belief.
A limiting belief is the idea, thoughts and decisions we have made about ourselves that inhibit us from living our best life. They exist within our unconscious mind and shape our responses to opportunities, experiences and events around us. When it comes to shame, this can often be intertwined with guilt.
I have no doubt that at some stage in your life, you have lacked self-confidence but felt shame around admitting it – “what would others think of me?”, you may have asked yourself.
Shame makes us believe that regardless of whether we sought help, we would still fail, disappoint or frustrate others and ourselves. It leads up down the path of limiting beliefs that we are not smart enough, attractive enough, talented enough or well-liked enough to find success in whatever it is we are struggling with.
So, I asked you, where is the problem in actually just not knowing or not having the resources? Absolutely nothing! The problem is not taking action to make the changes, to build your skillset or equip yourself with the knowledge or resources to do something.
I recently wrote a thought-provoking article that shared that even the masters started as beginners.
It was a reminder to all that at some stage in our lives, we may not have all the answers we’re looking for or the resources we need to achieve something but that doesn’t mean it isn’t possible.
