It may be time to start delegating the workload. When we delegate, we open up more opportunities for a more balanced life in both the home and workplace. Now, delegation doesn’t always come naturally. It can feel uncomfortable and accepting help can be challenging. However, just like other skills, delegation can be learnt.
Why do we find delegating tasks so tricky?
Some people are reluctant to delegate because they believe it is easier and quicker to do it themselves. Others feel guilty, or uncomfortable with sharing the workload with others. Our own limiting belief’s around how we think others may judge us if we do delegate and often we can find it difficult to swallow our pride and accept we can’t do EVERYTHING!
However, when we learn to delegate, we can devote more time to freely think about your projects and vision while also empowering your team. In fact, the best leaders in business are exceptional at delegation. Not only does delegating tasks free up more of your time, but it also opens up the doorways for your team members to showcase their own strengths. These new opportunities will make them feel appreciated and needed.
Delegation is a growth process, not just for you but for your team and family.
So, how can we learn to delegate?
Firstly, break down your tasks into tasks that you LOVE doing and tasks that you like doing the least. From here, decide who would be able to help you and what are your expectations. Who can you trust to help manage these tasks?
Next, decide which tasks take up most of your time. Delegation shouldn’t be another time-draining task that you have to manage, but instead a natural part of your existing process. It’s important to remember that delegation is not always an easy fix. There may be moments where the other person needs extra time to learn the new skills, or you may not have explained the new task thoroughly enough. Be patient, and use this as a learning experience. The best way to learn how to delegate is to start practising one task at a time!
If you are delegating tasks to your team, consider which tasks will help them to improve their skillset and in turn develop their career. Not only will this keep their job interesting, but it will also improve team morale and challenge them to reach a new level of leadership.
If you are delegating tasks at home, decide how you will share the workload and if you need to bring in someone to help. This could be a cleaner, cook, or even someone to drop the kids to and from school. Sometimes the simple tasks actually take up the most of our time.
When we learn to feel comfortable with delegating, our productivity in both the home and workplace is improved. It gives us time to focus on the work that brings us the most joy.
