If you think December is the time to kick back and slow down, think again! December is your last run before the new year to reflect, regroup and decide how in 2021, you’ll exceed your goals.
Without a doubt, 2020 has taught us how to pivot, embrace change and maximise online connections but with JobKeeper starting to roll back, what are you doing to create momentum, productivity and bounce into 2021 like never before?
How you will know you are ready to take on 2021 will be in the planning, preparation, accountability and support. Let’s dive deep into these key themes and start paving the way for a year where you achieve exactly what you desire.
To be truly successful, you first need to decide what it is that you want to achieve. If we haven’t created the path in which you can step out on to, you’ll likely be heading in the wrong direction! Let’s face it, this isn’t what we want as a business owner.
Begin your planning for the new year with your 2021 vision statement. What is that you and your business are going to achieve, stand for or represent in the year ahead? When you’re approaching your 2022 planning, what will you look back on and be proud of? Write this down.
Some people are not goal-orientated and for them, its more about what feels good at the time, like weighing up pros and cons. That’s okay! The idea when planning your achievements for the new year is to be flexible in your thinking and yet ideally know where you want to go so you arrive at that destination.
Once you know what you want to achieve, now it’s about how you’re going to get there! For many, setting goals starts with setting a large task with no tracking measures in place. This is often why many don’t make it past the planning phase.
Successful goal setting needs to be S.M.A.R.T. This allows you to see your vision in the bigger picture, measure it’s tracking and success and ultimately, make the overall task seem less overwhelming. Let’s prepare how you’re going to tackle your goals in 2021 and know when you’ve achieved them. They should be:
- Specific – The finer details of where, when and how much.
- Measurable – Without measurable tools in place, your goal is just a wish. How will you know when you’re getting closer or better, achieve your goal?
- Attainable – An aspirational goal may feel inspiring but if it’s not attainable, you could be setting yourself up for failure.
- Realistic – Set goals that can be actionable in your life and business. They should be aligned to your business strategy and you should know the resources you require to achieve them.
- Time-specific – Every action should have a realistic deadline to keep you accountable.
When transforming your goal into a S.M.A.R.T goal, you’re able to break down your large task into smaller, step-by-step actions. This allows you to focus on the day-to-day grind whilst allowing that bigger picture to grow.
For example, your goal for 2021 might be to write a book. Instead of a large, overwhelming statement like “I will write a book this year”, use this exercise to break down the goal with smaller ones like “I will write a chapter a month of my book” or “I will write a page every evening”. At the end of the day, the goal is still to write a book, but we’ve put measures, realistic actions and deadlines in place to allow the goal to develop each month.

How many times have you set a goal only to get bored of it or focus your attention elsewhere soon after? We’re all guilty of this; especially when setting those bold new year’s resolutions.
Accountability is key. This can be someone or something that reminds you of your goal regularly. If you’ve set a S.M.A.R.T goal, you will have measures in place each day, week or month to chip away at the overarching goal. It’s now a matter of ensuring that you stick to this.
Some use their strategies like calendar reminders, post-it notes placed in regularly viewed areas or even one of my personal favourites, the ‘don’t break the chain’ method as used by comedian, Jerry Seinfeld. Every day you take an action towards your overarching goal, you mark a cross on your calendar. That way, you start to physically see the momentum you’re creating, and ultimately, use this as motivation to keep striving towards success.
For some, they choose to disclose their goal with a trusted peer, friend or business coach. Having an accountability buddy is having someone on your team and equally committed to you achieving your goals. Through regular check-ins and updates, these people are in your corner and providing support (whether that be motivation or resources) to keep you moving forward.
Even with the best planning, action plan and accountability system, we all have moments where we feel like giving up. These setbacks, despite often being temporary, leave us feeling discouraged and as if we’re wasting our time. Don’t give up hope, there is an abundance of support options available to you like our Momentum Membership.
