Welcome to 2022! It’s a brand-new year, and for many of us, it’s time to put our memories of lockdown aside for good and dig into our new-year business goals!
January is done and dusted just like that and during the holiday break, I must be honest with you: I deep dived into my business with new lenses on, reviewing some of my goals for this year. Reflecting upon last year’s uncertainty, I pondered whether my new goals were real and achievable, and … aligning with my dreams.
There is no doubt that selecting goals that are obtainable is the first step to business success. But in all our excitement of starting a new business or pivoting towards another career, I realise that often our entrepreneurial spirit can get ahead of our practical mindset, leaving our realistic frame of mind in the dust.
Being clear of our vision & mission is most important right now as we come into 2022. So how can we get clear and maintain focus on the outcomes and business goals you have set out for yourself?
How do we reach for realistic goals in our ever-changing world?
Tired of prioritising your time with self-motivation cliches? Why not gain momentous results by setting business objectives with someone else, someone who can climb with you on a step-by-step basis, up towards your peak of success?
In this month’s blog, I am here to answer that question – as your own personal mountain guide: to move you past the motivational posters and self-help books and to give you some tips on how to set goals that are not only meaningful, but that can keep your dreams and passions alive.
So, grab your mountaineering gear and harness, and let’s get climbing! Here is my ultimate checklist – on how to set realistic goals that align with your dreams!
Reality Check #1 – Find Your Wants and Whys
Visualise yourself by the foot of a mountain, while breathing in the chilly morning air. As the wind rushes through you, truly ask yourself what you are passionate about. What moves you, excites you, and keeps you feeling valued? Being reflective boosts self-awareness and authenticity, two essential ingredients to being true to yourself and what your true passions are. Once you are aware of what your why is: your vision and mission will appear with minimum effort. You just need to listen to what your inner voice is telling you.
Reality Check #2 – Set A Clear Route
Be realistic know where you are going, and how you are going to get there. Without a reality check, we can lose sight of our path and get lost or distracted. Does your realistic route involve a period of study? To learn a specific skill for your business to take on a challenging project? If so, make sure you have a set path in mind first, so you can be ready for when your big opportunity comes. Making every effort count on your way up your peak of success, will stand you in good stead for the immediate future and will give you the confidence to clear the obstacles and reach your highest altitude!

Reality Check #3 – Mark Your Steps Patiently
As you walk up your mountain, you might find obstacles or elements in the way that may temporarily stop you in your tracks, blocking your path. So, you may have to take smaller micro-steps to tread more carefully. The same can be said for your business goals: they don’t need to be big goals, but more like little steps up towards the horizon. Why not treat your business more like a journey, and not an overnight success? Climbing up a mountain takes resilience and enormous amounts of patience. So does any business. It takes perseverance and copious amounts of determination to become an instant success in business.
