Communicating in Colours is like Predictive Text

Effective communication and business leadership go hand in hand. To be an excellent communicator you need to be an adaptive one, ready to switch between multiple situations. The way you communicate with a client is different from how you would motivate a team and different again from a one on one chat with an employee. Communication is much more nuanced than we understood even ten years ago, and investing the time to learn how to communicate more effectively will turn you from a good leader into a great one.

Despite communication being such a fundamental element of business success, many companies don’t invest the time or resources into helping managers upskill. Poor communication in the workplace can have long-lasting devastating effects such as high staff turnover, low team morale, and decreased productivity. On the other hand, excellent communication helps motivate the team towards shared goals, fosters a collaborative workplace, and drives staff loyalty.

One of the fundamental problems with communication is that there is no single effective way to communicate. Different people respond to different motivations. However, INTEGRUS DISC colour profiling can help you get an edge. By understanding your DISC colour and those of others, you can learn to reduce miscommunications. DISC represents four different communication methods, D – Dominance, I – Influence, S – Steadiness, and C – Compliance. Every person can and will fit within these four different types.

Excellent communication should feel natural. Much like friends and family joke about finishing each other’s sentences, good communication is about ‘speaking the same language.’ Think for a moment about people who are colourblind. They can go years without realising that what they see is different from other people. Imagine this in terms of language. What if you were speaking in red, but they are speaking in yellow. Instead of continuing to talk in red in the hope, they will finally understand you, there are ways you can change your communication style to ‘speak yellow.’ By adjusting your approach, to mirror theirs, you can speak the same language, be more predictive and remove any miscommunication.

Good leaders know and understand that flexibility is key to great communication.

Two people who do not understand each other can not effectively work towards a shared goal. By learning to communicate in a way that taps into your team and clients’ underlying motivations, you can create quicker results, build stronger teams, working relationships and ensure create better systems for greater outcomes.

If two people are speaking different languages how can they build trust and rapport?

Effective communication needs adaptability and flexibility and as a business leader, you must learn to understand different communication styles to get the most out of your team.
