Let’s be honest. The past two years haven’t given us a lot to celebrate and we’re all longing for a new beginning like no other as we welcome the New Year.

It’s an opportunity to start fresh, regain our focus and trust that we’re capable of achieving any goal we set for ourselves.

The first step here is letting go of the stories we have told ourselves about 2020 and 2021 respectively and not bringing what we may still be holding onto with us into 2022.

Remember, “nothing in the universe can stop you from letting go, except you”, so, how do we let go of the setbacks, shortfalls and emotions of the year that was and make these next 12 chapters our biggest bestseller yet?

Acknowledge the ‘what’ and ‘why’ behind moving forward
To move forward from the setbacks and challenges of the year (or years) that was, we first must acknowledge the impact of holding onto these stories and empower ourselves with the reasons why we must move forward.

Grab a notebook and write down what exactly it is that you’re holding onto. What is it that you are struggling to move on from? This could be something that occurred in your professional or personal life in 2021.

Then, once you’ve identified what it is that’s holding you back, it’s time to unpack the reasons why you must move on. Why is this hindering your goals for the New Year? How will you feel when you let it go? By letting go, how will this change the trajectory of you in this very moment but also you at the end of the year?

The biggest way let go of the past is to stop living in it! The reason we engage in activities like this is so we can shift our focus away from the things out of our control and move forward focusing on the things that we can.

We cannot change the fact that your setback or challenge occurred in the first place, but we can change the way that it’s controlling your mindset, the stories it’s consuming you with and ultimately, hindering your ability to move forward.

Feed your mind with positivity and empowerment
The control the stories we tell ourselves and our inner dialogue can have over us is astonishing; both negatively and positively. If you’re holding onto the challenges that were, you’re conditioning your mind to stay in the crux of these negative thought patterns. It’s time to replace these with not just positive inner dialogue but habits to practice every day that keep you focused and empowered on living the life you want.

It’s no coincidence that some of the world’s most successful individuals note daily rituals as a key contributor to their focus and success. Now, I’m not just talking about daily exercise or meditation (although they are both fantastic options) but any habit you create that builds momentum towards your success.

Some of my clients’ favourites include practicing gratitude, journaling their thoughts (a perfect tool to have up your sleeve for moving on from any setbacks that arise throughout the year), grounding in nature, boundaries with their digital devices and enhancing their expertise through education.

Get clear on your goals and priorities for the year ahead
