It is one of those things that commonly sneaks up on you and then often dismissed with “I’ll be right’, and we keep on pushing through! True?

Recognising this is one thing – dealing with it or preventing it is another!

So, here are 5 Ways to Overcome Burnout and help with your mental exhaustion.

1)    Learn how to reduce stress in the moment.
What do you do when you have a spare moment? It could be the few minutes you have while waiting to pick the kids up from sport. Or when you are waiting in line at the shops. For most of us, we pull out our phones, check Facebook, check emails, perhaps check bills. Instead, use these brief moments to check in with yourself and your mindset. Take a breath, a deep breath. Pay attention to your surroundings and take a moment to relax. Stand tall, relax your shoulders and BREATHE! Deep breathing can help with anxiety, stress and can give our minds a chance to rest.

 

2)    Manage troublesome thoughts and feelings by reducing excess sensory input.
Right now, how many sounds are around you? Can you hear a TV on in the background? Is there the dull hum of conversation? Are the lights on, the heater on, the kettle boiling? All of these noises are impacting your senses and using up your energy and focus. Take five minutes to sit in a dark room with minimal noise (you could even use a white noise app on your phone!). You’ll quickly start to feel relaxed and rested. Overstimulating our senses can soon lead to burnout and fatigue. 

 

3)    Give yourself permission to relax.
How many of you say, “I’ll take a break once this is done…”? Now, how many of you actually time the find to stop? Make sure you are taking a break every single day to relax. Whether it’s five minutes or an hour, you must take care of your mental and physical health with rest. Do you enjoy going for a walk? Binging on a TV show? Reading a magazine? Whatever it is, make sure you put some time away in a day to do something for YOU.

 

4)    Stop being unrealistic about how much you can get done.
As a business owner, our to-do list is neverending. There’s always more we could be doing- whether it’s marketing, sales or building out learning materials… we simply can’t do it all every single day. Set a to-do list for the day but be realistic. If every day you are finding yourself not completing your to-do list, it may be time to reset your expectations and limit how many tasks are put onto the to-do list.

 

5)    Rediscover fun and meaning that make work and life worthwhile.

What tasks are worth more in your business? Prioritise the types of work which bring you the most joy and the most return. Bonus points if they manage to do both. Learn to outsource the time-consuming tasks so you can focus your mental and physical energy on the activities which will bring you the most satisfaction.

Sometimes it can be challenging to motivate yourself to take the steps that can relieve stress and burnout. 

But when we take the time to re-evaluate our time and learn to relax, we can start to feel rejuvenated to do what we love best. Plus we can improve our relationships at work and at home.
