Where in your life have you closed your eyes and just hoped ‘something’ would just go away? Let’s be honest, we all do it!
The question is did it go away?
Did the situation start off with a little bit of procrastination and then did it grow into a BIG FROG?
We’ve all experienced the nagging dread and anxiety that accompanies procrastination. Procrastination (avoiding specific tasks) and avoidance (a more general pattern) can also cause problems in relationships, especially if you make a habit of avoiding things or you routinely ask others to do things for you rather than clear decided delegation.
For anyone who feels like they’re getting in their own way, there’s a very high chance that avoidance is a big part of the problem. Avoidance creates stress, increases anxiety about whatever you’re avoiding, and sucks away at your self-confidence. Like perfectionism, avoidance creates a Catch-22. We all have things we feel overwhelmed by. Therefore, everyone needs a personal toolkit of strategies for breaking through procrastination and avoidance. Here is one thing you might want to try if you have the tendency to put off doing things that you really need to tackle.
IDENTIFY IF A SELF-INFLICTED RULE IS CAUSING YOUR AVOIDANCE (or a strategy that really DOESN’T work for you)
When you find yourself thinking, I have to do X to get this done, take a moment to check if that’s really true–or if it’s just a rule you’ve created for yourself. For example, say that you have the tendency to put off your Christmas shopping until the very last minute. You have in your mind that you need to do it all in one go and get it out of the road. But who says Christmas requires an 8-hour shopping expedition? You can, can’t you simplify your expectations by making a list of who you need to buy for Google on the internet some ideas and then start NOW!
Creating an alternative way of doing something that isn’t your ‘habit strategy’. Often a habit strategy stops producing the best results for you but because its a habit you just unconsciously do!
What I learnt over five years ago that has me eat my frogs daily was during my NLP Course (Neuro Linguistic Programming) and that was a very interesting segment on ‘NLP Strategies and States’.
NLP Strategies is a term that describes any internal and external set of experiences which consistently produces a specific outcome. It is what it is that you do in your mind in the process of doing something. Strategies are different from states in that they are a process, state is a state.
So, Change your strategy change your outcome!

Two: Take yourself out to breakfast or lunch.
Find some time to take yourself out for a meal- YOU DESERVE IT! Now here’s the catch, leave your devices at home. Just take an A4 piece of paper and a pen so you can evaluate what’s going on with you. Write down the one thing you are not doing – that if you did do – it would make the most significant difference to your life right now. Find out what your hesitations are- is it limiting fears, is it limiting emotions, is it simply because you don’t know how to do it. Decide what needs to be done for this to change. Will you need to delegate these tasks or do you need to find somebody such as a life coach or business coach/consultant to assist you from A-Z. Whatever you need to, enjoy a long lunch and a moment to build a roadmap to change.
Three: Organise your life.
Check in with yourself and ask, am I really as organised as I could be? What else could you be doing to make your day run smoothly? Often when we are unorganised, or unmotivated, it could be that we aren’t sure unconsciously which task we should be doing first. Do the research, list out the tasks that need to be done and prioritise them. What really needs to be done? Only choose three things that NEED to be done and make sure you succeed in getting them done for that day. Completing a list of tasks and seeing results can kickstart motivation and make you feel a sense of accomplishment. It also can remove the overwhelming feeling when we can break our tasks down into smaller tasks.
