How does the word commitment make you feel?

For most of us, the word commitment usually evokes a strong emotion- sometimes good, sometimes bad.

The word commitment goes hand in hand with a purpose or plans to achieve a goal. When we show commitment to our loved ones, we build on our relationships. Commitment shows purpose, and it means action.

However, this word alone can be terrifying for some.

They will avoid commitment like the plague and dish out excuses to why they can’t commit.

Whether it is relationships, a fitness journey or even the next stage of a business, they see commitment as a problem and something to be avoided at all costs.

Being committed to something or someone is simply not an option.

As they believe that there is always something better, something bigger and something else around the corner or fear the idea of taking on responsibility.

So, begs to ask the questions – Why are people so scared of commitment?

Sometimes it is to avoid. Avoiding commitment dodges the possibility to fail.

What if they commit to a relationship and they get hurt?

What if they commit to a new healthy eating regime and not actually feel better or lose weight?

Sadly, the what ifs and the fear of failure means they will miss out on opportunities to better themselves or to change their life and grow.

But…so what if you fail?

You can use it as a learning opportunity to get it right next time. We all come across obstacles from time to time, but if we don’t take a chance to commit to something, we will lose out on ever moving forward.

We all have more than one shot to get something right!

Practice makes permanent!

Sometimes we like to think we are committed to something when actually we’ve just made a promise to achieve something. Imagine making a commitment to spend more time with the family and less time at work but not actually taking any steps to make this change. The commitment becomes lip service without any real desire to achieve the end result.

How many times have you read personal affirmations and “committed” to making a change in your life? Or how many times have you set goals and then failed to commit to them? At the end of the day, you can tell yourself you are making a change, but until you commit to something, it is just an empty promise.

Action begets outcome. Outcome begets action.

When we learn to become committed to our goals, we also learn to be patient.

We learn how to take action, and we learn from our mistakes.
