Here are five tips to ‘keep swimming’ – even when you feel like you are in mud.
1) Keep moving…even if it is at a snail’s pace.
When you stop and stand still, you lose momentum. The momentum is what keeps us exploring and helps us to find that one thing. That one thing can help make a difference
2) Let go of the past.
When we stop and feel stuck in the mud, we begin to reflect on what could have been. In my experience, this is the door opening for depression. We look back into the past and think “I could have… I should have… I didn’t do this.” When we are depressed, we feel depleted and defeated and stuck in a stationary condition. For some people, depression is standing still and looking back into the past and thinking, “If only I had not met him or if only I didn’t do that, or if that didn’t happen or she didn’t say this or I should have done that”. When we begin to peer into our rear vision mirror, we crash our momentum, and we stop moving forward. We start reversing back into the what if’s instead of driving forward into what we actually want.
3) Learn to improve your time management skills.
What are you doing that is taking up so much of your time? Is it really helping you to move forward? Do you lack organisational skills? By tweaking your time management skills, you can alleviate some stress. In fact, just learning to manage your time better can help remove the feelings of being stuck and instead allow you to create more time more space to do the things that you love.
4) Understand your stress and what is the cause of it.
The stress may be there – it could even be warranted. You may have too much on your plate. With all of my life experiences, trials and tribulations, my understanding of stress
5) Be present in the now.
People need to be present in the now, which will help loosen the grip that depression and anxiety can have on you. For some people, anxiety is the fear of not achieving or not being good enough. It’s looking into the future and thinking – I can’t do that. Some people feel depressed because they spend too much time in the past. Being present in the now can help you to accept what has been and prepare for what is coming.
